Newark
Newark, the largest city in the state of New Jersey, is about five miles from Manhattan, and about two miles from Staten Island, New York. It is a major container shipping port serving New York harbor. Its airport, the Newark Liberty International Airport was the first major airport facility to serve the New York metropolitan area. It is a bustling city with scores of live theaters, movie theaters and a lively nightlife. It is an old city, established in 1666 by the New Haven Colonists, who were forced out of power because they had given shelter to the judges, who had sentenced Charles I of England to death and had subsequently fled to Connecticut.
Art and Culture in Newark
Newark is home to a number of art galleries and museums. City Without Walls and Aljira are contemporary art galleries, famous for showcasing the under-represented and emerging artistes. Other popular art galleries are Banneker Center, Ellen Ashely Gallery and Harambee Gallery. Newark Museum is the largest museum in New Jersey. It has a rich collection of American art and its Tibetan art collection is one of the best in the world. There is a new museum for African-American Music coming up in the city soon. The Jewish Museum of New Jersey portrays the cultural heritage of Jewish people of New Jersey. A number of historical exhibits are organized by the New Jersey Historical Society and Newark Public library.
Connectivity with other places
Due to its excellent network of air, rail, road and ship traffic, Newark is a major gateway to the New York Metropolitan area. Newark Liberty Airport is the second busiest airport in New York area. Port Newark is the largest container port in the eastern US. The city is intersected by a number of important highways. The city has an excellent bus link to various places as well. The Newark Penn Station is an important train station serving Manhattan and a number of places in New Jersey area as well as Amtrak destinations to Philadelphia and Washington DC.
Architecture of Newark
The city is also famous for its number of art deco buildings, which was a major international design movement during the first half of last century incorporating decorative art in architecture style such as interior design, visual art, fashion painting and graphic art in buildings. There are quite a few skyscrapers still existing, which were built during that period, such as National Newark Building, the tallest building in Newark. The Cathedral of Sacred Hearts is built on Gothic architecture and is one of the biggest gothic cathedrals in US. Newark is home to the first Presbyterian Church and Cemetery and Mount Olivet Cemetery.
Commerce in Newark
Newark is home to a number of popular colleges and universities, such as New Jersey Institute of Technology, Rutgers University, the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, etc. The city is an important insurance center in the US. Prudential Insurance, the biggest insurance company in the world, is headquartered in Newark. The city is in fact the third biggest insurance center after New York and Hartford in the United States.
